Introducing your Balsall Common Primary School Governors

 

What is a Local Governing body?

All schools in the UK benefit from a mandatory governance structure to help the school’s leadership team to achieve everything possible for  the school. The easiest way to understand the duties of the Governors is to think of them as a board of (unpaid) non-executive directors. It isn’t a perfect analogy but certainly it is the Governors’ responsibility to oversee the activities of the school, reviewing policies, approving the budget, and supporting the management team. Governors are also accountable to parents and other stakeholders for the performance of the school.

How does the Multi-Academy Trust work?

The Central Schools Trust is a Multi-Academy Trust created in 2016 and led by Balsall Common Primary school. The Board of Directors of the Trust have delegated certain functions to be locally managed which means that the Local Governing Body has general responsibility for the effective management of the school.

What are the benefits of this for Balsall Common Primary School?

In addition to the accountability offered by the diversity of the Local Governing Body, the Multi-Academy Trust offers a broader array of expertise and insight for leadership and planning decisions around the education system in our community.

Within this framework, retaining local management for the BCPS Local Governing Body allows the school’s individual needs to be met effectively. A holistic overview of all of the school’s activities  enables the Governors to target resources and develop the nature and character of the school to meet the needs and wishes of parents, children and teachers. Governors  are able to look at the bigger picture in the community and work with the school’s management team to set a strategic direction that’s tailored specifically to our school.

Who is on the BCPS Local Governing Body?

The Local Governing Body is made up of 7 members, including 2 members of staff and 2 Parent representatives.

Parent representatives on the Local Governing Body are an important part of our school. Not only are they directly aware of the results of school policy on our children by being part of the parent community, but they also bring a variety of skills and experience to benefit the running of the school.

How should I communicate with the Governors?

You elect them and so can make your views known to them. The best way to do this is to email the Clerk to the Governors: g2vphillips@balsall-common.solihull.sch.uk

How do I become a Parent Governor? There is an induction and mentoring programme for all new Governors. When Vacancies occur the post is advertised through parent mail and an election process is undertaken.

Hazel Lee

I have lived in Balsall Common since 2007 and had a connection with the school when my son joined the Nursery. He is now six and moving to year two.

My career spans 20 years in the field of HR leadership, and working with leadership teams to grow and develop people and businesses from an HR perspective across Europe.  I have a Masters degree in Business and Strategy as well as an HR Diploma.

Having a son at Balsall Common Primary School, I really wanted to support the School and am very pleased to have been appointed as a Governor.  In addition to our Governor remit to focus on the standards, performance and provision of a great educational environment for our children, I am also the link Governor focusing on the school curriculum.

Mark Fitch

I have two children, one currently in year two and the other at the School Nursery. I have lived in the village for over 10 years and began as a parent Governor in 2017.  I focus on three things on behalf of the local Governing body: Data and assessment, Safeguarding and Science.

During the day I'm a management consultant, where I help the senior teams in organisations to solve difficult problems and make the most of their resources. I am pleased to support the school, getting stuck into the challenges, and working with the leadership to make a positive difference.

 

Richard Murray,

I have had a connection with the school as a parent since 2005 and currently my youngest daughter is in year four.

My professional background is that I qualified as a Solicitor 21 years ago and for the last four years I have also worked as a business coach, helping organisations to focus on their strategies and achieve their goals.

I am currently the link Governor with responsibility for leading on Mathematics and the Leadership and Management of the school. My main focus across the trust at present is to challenge the Management Team to raise standards across all abilities with the school.

 

Ross Mckinnon

My wife, Olivia, and I have one son, Jack, who is six years old and will be in 2L in the 17/18 academic year.

I am a qualified accountant and currently work for the law firm Eversheds Sutherland in Birmingham.

My specific role in the team is the Health and Safety link Governor. This involves a visit once every half term to do a site walk around, check the physical records are all up to date and ensure any actions from previous visits have been addressed.

I hope as Governors we can help the head teacher and his senior team to ensure the school is a safe environment for everyone, is well run and that high standards are maintained and improvements made in areas identified for improvement. We aim to do this by being a critical friend and challenging management where appropriate.

Shelley Thorp

As a family we moved to Balsall Common in 2014 from Surrey. We were looking for an area to settle with our two children and were immediately attracted to the community feel and outstanding school provision available in Balsall Common. Before having my daughter I worked within the Senior Management Team of a large outstanding infant school. I studied a BA Honours in Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status at King Alfred’s College Winchester and have since become a qualified Special Educational Needs Coordinator.

My son is now in year one and my daughter will follow him in the coming years. I am passionate about their education and about the immeasurable impact a great school has on a community. I want to share my professional knowledge and experience to continue the school’s drive for excellence while supporting staff to ensure all pupils achieve their maximum potential in a happy, healthy and inspiring environment.

Within the Local Governing body I am the link Governor for Safeguarding and for SEND (special Educational Needs and Disability).

Graeme Burgess

Graeme studied English at Warwick University and, later in his teaching career, went on to achieve a Master of Arts.

His early teaching career was spent in under privileged schools in Coventry, where he learned a great deal about managing challenging behaviour.  Graeme took up his first headship in Warwickshire in 2000, joining Balsall Common as head in April 2009 and becoming the Executive Headteacher of the Central Schools Trust in 2016.

Throughout his career, Graeme has taken responsibility for maths, science, ICT, assessment and English has always been involved in running numerous after school clubs for the children. His focus as a headteacher is to enable all pupils to reach their fullest potential.

Graeme, alongside all other governors, is determined to ensure that Balsall Common Primary School Academy continues to offer exceptional provision.

Joanne Meyrick

This is now my sixth year working at Balsall Common Primary School. During this time, I have worked in years 4, 2 and 3. 

I studied Biology at the University of Bristol and then spent a year working in Cancer Research prior to commencing my PGCE. I chose to complete a specialised Science PGCE due to my interest in the subject. This involved placements both in primary and secondary schools. My first teaching job was at a middle school in Redditch teaching some Key Stage 3 Science as well as many different subjects to my year 5 groups. 

I am the staff governor and hope to work with the other governors and head teacher to support staff in ensuring the school continues to offer high standards and a safe and supportive learning environment.
